The Carolina Panthers are adding some much-needed experience to their defense, agreeing to a one-year deal with veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke. The move comes as Carolina finalizes its roster ahead of the regular season.
Okereke, 30, spent the past three seasons with the New York Giants after beginning his NFL career with the Indianapolis Colts. The former third-round pick out of Stanford has developed into a productive and experienced linebacker throughout his seven-year career.
Last season, Okereke started all 17 games for New York and finished with 143 total tackles, along with a sack, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. He has recorded 805 tackles, 7.5 sacks, seven interceptions and 11 forced fumbles in 110 career games.
The Panthers entered the offseason looking to improve their linebacker group. Carolina signed Devin Lloyd earlier this year and spent training camp evaluating Trevin Wallace and Claudin Cherelus for another starting role. Okereke now gives the Panthers another veteran option and could immediately compete for significant playing time.
The addition also brings leadership to a relatively young Carolina defense. Okereke served as a team captain during all three of his seasons with the Giants and was the team’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee. His experience could be especially valuable as the Panthers prepare for the regular season.
For Carolina, the signing is a low-risk move that could provide a major boost at linebacker. Okereke has plenty of starting experience and has consistently shown the ability to produce tackles at a high level.
Now, the veteran linebacker will look to make an immediate impact in Charlotte and help strengthen a Panthers defense hoping to take another step forward in 2026.
The Panthers are betting that Okereke’s experience, production and leadership can help stabilize the linebacker position and give the defense another reliable veteran presence heading into the season.
