Panthers Expected To Sign QB Kyle Trask

King especially stole the night as he carried the ball for a five-yard rushing touchdown to put the Panthers up 33-30 as time expired. Unfortunately, though, King reportedly suffered a hamstring injury that has put him on a “week-to-week” injury status, according to Joe Person of The Athletic. With King expected to miss some time, the Panthers are expected to sign former second-round passer Kyle Trask, per Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer.

In Person’s original reporting of the injury, he suggested that a Trask signing would make a lot of sense, in case Carolina felt the need to add another arm to the group during King’s absence. The Panthers hosted Trask just over a week ago for a tryout. Person also offered up the name Jack Plummer, the reigning United Football League passing yards leader and MVP. Plummer originally signed with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent out of Louisville but was waived during final roster cuts last year.

The addition of Trask makes a lot of sense, though, as the Florida-product was drafted by the Buccaneers with the 64th pick in 2021 and spent four years on the team. While Trask was there, Panthers head coach Dave Canales served the 2023 season as Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator. If a deal to sign Trask becomes official, Trask would be reuniting with Canales in Carolina as he provides another camp arm and backup option. Trask could also potentially unseat King as QB3.

Steadily making progress year after year, Bryce Young is still the clear QB1 in Carolina. The Panthers exercised his fifth-year option, and though extension talks are happening internally, nothing is guaranteed just yet. Kenny Pickett stands as the primary backup behind Young. As the team only had three quarterbacks on the roster at the time, Pickett started the HOF Game before allowing King to come in for his fun. King certainly impressed in the small sample he was given, but the team worked Trask out before King’s injury and may be interested in upgrading at QB3.
