Panthers GM Dan Morgan addresses potential Bryce Young extension

Whether or not quarterback Bryce Young will receive a contract extension this offseason remains the biggest question hovering over the Carolina Panthers

During an appearance on NFL Network, Panthers general manager Dan Morgan noticeably spoke quite carefully about Young's future.

How serious are Panthers about signing Bryce Young to a multiyear deal?

"That’s something, here internally, that we’ll keep talking through," Morgan said about possibly signing Young to an extension, per Griffin McVeigh of On3. "We’ll be in touch with Bryce’s agent, and we’ll figure it out at the right time."

While playing under head coach Dave Canales and offensive coordinator Brad Idzik, Young helped the 2025 Panthers claim the division title. However, Carolina went 8-9 and only earned a postseason berth via tiebreaker advantage.

Meanwhile, Pro Football Reference stats show that Young ended the regular season tied for 25th in the NFL among qualified players with a 47.6 adjusted QBR and tied for 26th with an 87.8 passer rating. Needless to say, such numbers hardly scream "elite franchise quarterback."

How "excited" are Panthers truly about Bryce Young?

"Right now, I know Bryce is focused on getting better every single day," Morgan continued. "We obviously love him. He’s getting better year after year, becoming a great leader for us and, really, mastering Dave and Brad Idzik’s offense. So, we’re excited about Bryce. When the contract happens, we’ll see about that. But we’re excited about him and our future here in 2026."

On Tuesday, NFL insider Dan Graziano of ESPN wrote that "Carolina doesn't seem in a huge hurry to do a Bryce Young extension." Nothing that Morgan said would lead one to believe that Graziano was incorrect.

The Panthers recently picked up the fifth-year option for 2027 attached to Young's contract, so Morgan doesn't need to be in any rush to make a decision about the signal-caller's long-term future. Of course, the risk in not paying Young now is that he'll take a major leap later this year and become more expensive.

It sounds like Morgan may be willing to take that risk unless Young offers the club a discount this summer.
