Panthers GM Marty Hurney has had discussions with Christian McCaffrey on new deal

Christian McCaffrey's deal with the Carolina Panthers expires after the 2020 season, and general manager Marty Hurney would like to keep the running back around past the upcoming campaign.

While no new deal has been reached, Hurney and McCaffrey reportedly have had discussions about a new deal, according to Steve Reed of the Associated Press.

In three seasons with the Panthers, McCaffrey has become a focal point of the Carolina offense. He has 2,920 rushing yards with 24 touchdowns in three seasons and had a breakout year in 2019 with 1,387 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground while adding 1,005 yards receiving and four touchdowns.

McCaffrey, 23, has never missed a game in his three seasons, and with Teddy Bridgewater at the helm of the Panthers' offense, he's due for another fantastic year.

If McCaffrey and the Panthers can't work out a new deal, Carolina could be in trouble past the 2020 season. While the Panthers have Reggie Bonnafon, Mike Davis, Marcus Murphy and Jordan Scarlett, none of those players is nearly as talented as McCaffrey.

If Hurney doesn't think he can lock up McCaffrey, then the Panthers could add a running back in the draft. They have seven picks in this month's draft, so they'll definitely have the opportunity to add some talent at that position.
