The Carolina Panthers have released linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, per an announcement on Thursday.

The 32-year-old veteran spent one season with the team and racked up 5.5 sacks. Clowney, a former No. 1 overall pick, got the chance to play for his hometown team as a native of nearby Rock Hill, SC. He'll be in search of his seventh NFL home since going to the Houston Texans in the 2014 NFL Draft.

The core of the Panthers defense will have a new look next season. After acquiring Vikings outside linebacker Patrick Jones II during free agency, they came back with two edge rushers in this year's draft. Texas A&M's Nic Scourton and Ole Miss' Princely Umanmielen provide depth, along with D.J. Wonnum and DJ Johnson.

Outside of releasing Clowney, the Panthers placed Jonathon Brooks on the physically unable to perform list. They also waived tight end Colin Granger with an injury settlement.

The roster currently sits at 62 players. The releases come ahead of rookie minicamp, with eight drafted rookies and a slew of undrafted free agents who will all have yet to be signed.
