Panthers owner to offer one head-coaching candidate a 'blank check'?

After an embarrassing 2023 season, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper appears desperate to get his next coaching hire right, no matter the cost.

Many within the Carolina organization believe Tepper will offer a “blank check” to Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, according to Albert Breer of The MMQB. There is some conflicting information about this, however, with Tepper said to be eager to “check 10 boxes” instead of just one with his next hire.

Johnson has been consistently linked to the Panthers job. The organization pursued him last year, but he opted to turn them down to stay with the Lions for another season. If the Panthers renew their pursuit, they may face some challenges, as Tepper’s reputation is not great and Johnson may want to wait for a better opportunity.

The blank check, however, could work in Tepper’s favor. After all, Johnson was reported to have some incredible salary demands, but those were firmly denied by his agent.
