When Shaq Thompson went down early last season, Panthers fans feared the worst. But in the middle of the chaos, a third-round rookie quietly stepped into the spotlight — and now, Trevin Wallace may be primed for a breakout year.

According to Pro Football Focus, Wallace is one of the NFL’s top breakout candidates for 2025. The 23-year-old linebacker showed flashes of high-level talent in his unexpected debut campaign, especially in coverage, where he earned a solid 64.2 PFF grade — ranking him 24th among qualifying linebackers.

“Wallace was thrust into a starting role as a rookie… forcing the third-round rookie onto the field much sooner than anticipated,” PFF noted in their analysis.

Despite being raw in some areas, Wallace handled the challenge with poise. In just 10 starts, he racked up 61 total tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 4 passes defensed, while growing more confident each week. His athleticism and range — traits that defined his play at Kentucky — translated immediately to the pro level.

What’s more telling than the stats is the Panthers’ offseason approach. Carolina didn’t sign a veteran linebacker in free agency or invest high draft capital at the position. That’s a clear sign they believe Wallace is ready to take the next step.

Head coach Dave Canales has emphasized speed and versatility on defense, and Wallace fits the mold. With Thompson leaving via free agency and only Christian Rozeboom being acquired, Wallace won’t be asked to carry the unit — but he will be expected to elevate it.

For a Panthers team in transition, identifying young core pieces is critical. Wallace may not have been a household name last season, but he could become one soon.

Carolina fans, circle his name now — because if Trevin Wallace breaks out, so does this defense.
