Darnold is entering his second season with the Panthers, while Mayfield, of course, was acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Browns just three weeks ago. The former finished the 2021 season with a 59.9% completion percentage for 2,527 passing yards, nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 12 games (11 starts), while the latter recorded a 60.5% completion percentage with 3,010 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions across 14 contests (all starts).
Anticipating the fierce battle for QB1 status, Darnold said he was "cool" with his new teammate on Tuesday. Darnold turned 25 in June, while Mayfield turned 27 in April.
Carolina's preseason opener is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Aug. 13 against the Washington Commanders.
