Panthers rookie wideout shows flashes in preseason debut

Carolina Panthers first-round rookie Tetairoa McMillan made his highly anticipated preseason debut Friday afternoon, giving fans their first look at the promising wideout in action. While preseason results often come with a bit of an asterisk, McMillan’s performance provided a look into the skill set that made him a the eighth pick in this year’s draft. On the day, he caught two passes for a total of 43 yards, showing a strong connection with third-year quarterback Bryce Young.

His biggest moment came on a deep bomb down the right sideline. Young dropped back, spotted McMillan one-on-one and delivered a beautiful dime right on the shoulder of the young wideout. The completion showed the early chemistry being built between the Panthers franchise quarterback and his new target. It was the type of play that Carolina fans hope to see often during the upcoming regular season.

The day wasn’t entirely perfect for McMillan. He missed a potential touchdown when he failed to turn his head in time. The ball from Bryce Young was well placed and timed, but the rookie was unable to hold on to the throw. The incompletion should not worry fans, as it was a simple rookie mistake that the two will rep-out during future preseason games.

Beyond the stats, McMillan’s debut was a good look at his elite size, athleticism and ability to win downfield. While his opportunities were limited in a preseason setting, he made the most of them, giving the fans and coaching staff reason to feel very good about his future role.

For the Panthers, this was a very encouraging step in what they hope will be a productive season for the first-round pick. With training camp and more preseason games ahead, there will be plenty of time for the young wideout to fine-tune his game, build more chemistry with Young and earn a bigger role in the offense.

For now, Friday’s performance was a small but exciting sample of what could be in store when the games start to count.
