Harrowing details pertaining to a shooting on Park Avenue continue to release in the time since tragedy struck in New York City. A 27-year-old man allegedly shot and killed four people at a Midtown office, where the National Football League’s headquarters is located, among other businesses.
The suspected shooter, Shane Tamura, has a documented mental health history and is a former high school football player, according to the police. As law enforcement searches for the motive, ABC News is reporting the suspect carried a note claiming he suffered from CTE, where he made references to the NFL, as well.
“The 27-year-old man who allegedly shot and killed four people at a Midtown office building on Monday carried a note in his pocket claiming he suffered from CTE and asking that his brain be studied,” police sources told ABC News. “The note also made references to the National Football League, police said. The shooting on Monday took place at 345 Park Ave., which houses, among other companies, the NFL’s headquarters.”
ABC News added that the three-page note that was on Tamura was described on Tuesday by sources as rambling: “It contained references to the NFL that sources described as vague.”
As part of the tragedy, an NFL employee was seriously injured. Tamura is dead, as he reportedly “killed himself,” per ABC News. Additionally, The New York Post relayed that “at least four other people were shot and killed — and at least six others (were) injured” in the aftermath.
In the time since, league commissioner Roger Goodell has written an internal memo to NFL employees: “NFL employees: As has been widely reported, a gunman committed an unspeakable act of violence in our building at 345 Park Avenue,” Goodell’s said. “One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack. He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition. NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family.
“We believe that all of our employees are otherwise sage and accounted for, and the building has nearly been cleared. We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded to this threat quickly and decisively and to Officer Islam, who gave his life to protect others. Please continue to pay close attention to GSOC notices for all available emergency information. These communications allow us to ensure that you are safe.”
Continuing, Goodell also announced new security measures at the building on Park Avenue in light of the shooting. Employees were also encouraged to use the company’s resources available to them.
“As you know, there are significant resources available to all employees, including grief counselors,” Goodell added. “Shortly, HR will send you more information on the available resources and how to take advantage of them.
“Those based in New York should work remotely tomorrow. It is understandable if you prefer to take the day off. There will be an increased security presence at 345 Park Avenue in the days and weeks to come. Every one of you is a valued member of the NFL family. We will get through this together.”
Moreover, Tamura reportedly began to open fire at around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, before turning the gun on himself. A witness described the incident to The Post, saying it sounded like a barrage of shots, similar to an automatic weapon: “Like a high-capacity weapon.”
No matter what, Monday’s events were certainly a tragedy. Thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the matter in New York City and around the world.
