The Texas Tech Red Raiders and BYU Cougars will face each other in a Week 11 clash, which will be a fight between the best of Big 12. BYU leads the table with an 8-0 record, while Texas Tech is 8-1.
But other than the hyped clash, the matchup has also generated great interest due to the involvement of two Kansas City Chiefs personalities.
Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid on Thursday lent their star power to a community literacy drive tied to this weekend’s high-profile college football matchup in Lubbock, asking fans from Texas Tech and BYU to bring books to alumni tailgates for donation to Literacy Lubbock.

Mahomes, Texas Tech graduate and Chiefs quarterback and Reid, the longtime NFL coach and an alum of BYU, co-star in a short commercial encouraging fans to “team up” at the Cougs Care tailgate and at Texas Tech alumni events to drop off new or gently used children’s books.
The drive will also accept donations via an Amazon wish list and cash contributions, with organizers saying the collected titles will support early childhood and family literacy programs in the Lubbock area.
Mahomes has been a prominent supporter of his alma mater in recent years. In August 2024, he and his wife Brittany committed $5 million to the Campaign for Fearless Champions, a major gift toward the South End Zone and Dustin R. Womble Football Center at Jones AT&T Stadium.
"It’s so special to have College GameDay because you know it’s one of those deals, it really is a dream as a player to be a part of that," Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire expressed. The initiative and the hosting of College GameDay will bring extra attention to Lubbock.
There are also rumors that Mahomes might drop in at Lubbock for a surprise appearance at College GameDay, courtesy of the bye week. It's cherishing to see both programs coming together for a good cause, a true display of sportsmanship.
It's not uncommon for BYU to participate in these drives. They have also worked towards various causes since 2019. The most recent being their donation of winter clothing and shoes before the Iowa State Cyclones game.
