Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs struggled down the stretch of the 2025 NFL season. After starting 6-5, the Chiefs lost their final six games to finish 6-11, missing the playoffs for the first time since Mahomes became the team’s starting quarterback in 2018.

Despite Kansas City's struggles, Mahomes still performed well in his ninth NFL season. The former Texas Tech quarterback completed 315-of-502 passes for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, adding another 422 yards and five scores on the ground. But a torn ACL in mid-December ended Mahomes' season and put his start of the 2026 season in jeopardy.

After missing the playoffs, the Chiefs have undergone several changes to Andy Reid’s coaching staff. Multiple assistants have departed for other NFL opportunities, while offensive coordinator Matt Nagy left to join the New York Giants. Kansas City replaced Nagy with former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, though the Chiefs could still be at risk of losing another coach.

Dan Williams joined the Chiefs in 2019 as a coaching intern before being promoted to assistant to the head coach the following year. In 2023, he became Kansas City’s assistant quarterbacks coach, a role he has held for the past three seasons while working under quarterbacks coach David Girardi. During that span, Williams has worked closely with Mahomes while helping the Chiefs win three Super Bowls in five appearances.

But on Thursday, NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported that the Arizona Cardinals have requested permission to interview Williams for their vacant quarterbacks coach position. Because the move would be a promotion, the Chiefs cannot block the interview, and if Williams were to leave, Mahomes could be working with a new assistant quarterbacks coach next season.

"Arizona Cardinals have requested to interview Dan Williams for their QB coach position, per source," Wolfe wrote on X. "Williams is in Year 7 with Chiefs, last 3 as assistant QB coach. A young rising coach and key figure for Patrick Mahomes with a chance for elevation."

While the Chiefs continue to address Reid's coaching staff, they will also look to make changes to the roster when free agency begins on March 11. Then, they will have the No. 9 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, which starts on April 23.
