Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs felt the absence of rookie offensive tackle Josh Simmons on Sunday as they suffered a disappointing 28-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Simmons has been away from the Chiefs for the last four games due to personal reasons, and one could argue that he was most missed in Sunday’s loss.
Kansas City’s offensive line struggled to protect Mahomes against a relentless Buffalo secondary. The two-time All-Pro quarterback faced tremendous pressure all game long, which resulted in Mahomes completing just 15-of-34 passes. It was a career-low completion rate of 44.1% for the Chiefs QB, and it was only the first time in his career that he missed more throws than he completed.
To add to Mahomes’ misery on Sunday, it was the first time this season that he failed to secure a single touchdown in a game. He entered the contest with 189-of-282 completed passes (67.0%) for 2,099 yards and a league-best 17 touchdowns. On Sunday, the Bills sacked Mahomes thrice, resulting in a loss of 24 yards. They also picked him off once, which was just the six-time Pro Bowler’s fifth interception of the season.
The good news for Mahomes is that he will get some much-needed added protection in their next game. This is after Simmons finally returned to rejoin the team following his lengthy personal absence.
“Sources: #Chiefs rookie LT Josh Simmons has returned to the team facility after missing the last four games to tend to a personal family matter,” reported NFL reporter Jordan Schultz on Monday.

The reason behind Simmons’ absence was not disclosed publicly. He was supposed to play in Week 6 against the Detroit Lions but was scratched due to personal reasons. He missed each of the team’s four succeeding games, with Jaylon Moore replacing him in the starting lineup.
Simmons was the Chiefs’ first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The team selected him 32nd overall following a national championship-winning senior year with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Simmons has played well in his first five games, allowing him to secure his spot in the o-line as the starting left tackle. The 22-year-old is expected to resume this role for head coach Andy Reid now that he’s returned.
Simmons’ next chance to play will be in Week 11. The Chiefs are on their bye in Week 10, but they will be back in action on Nov. 16, in an AFC West rivalry matchup against the current division leaders, the 7-2 Denver Broncos. It’s going to be a road game for Kansas City, with kickoff from Empower Field at Mile High scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET.
