Patrick Mahomes could make NFL history with Super Bowl win

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes could become the first player since 1999 to win both the Super Bowl and MVP in the same season, according to a Monday article from CBS Sports NFL writer Shanna McCarriston. Former St. Louis Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner was the last player to do both.

Six quarterbacks earned both a Super Bowl win and an MVP win in the same season. Brett Favre won both in 1996, Steve Young in 1994, Joe Montana in 1989, Terry Bradsaw in 1978 and Bart Starr in 1966. Lawrence Taylor pulled the feat off in 1986 for the New York Giants. He took home both the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year before he earned four tackles during a 39-20 championship win over the Denver Broncos.

Pulling off the same feat as the six quarterbacks would put him in a prime spot for the Pro Football Hall of Fame after just six seasons in the league. Mahomes has five Pro Bowl selections, two All-Pro seasons, an MVP selection in 2018 and a Super Bowl ring in 2020, according to Pro Football Reference. The former Texas Tech quarterback was just 25 when he won his first ring.

Mahomes threw for 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns on 648 attempts in 17 games played this season. He earned five passing touchdowns in a 44-21 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1. The former first-round pick threw for over 300 passing yards on 10 different occasions during the 2022 season.

Rotowire gave Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts the highest odds at winning the NFL MVP. Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson, who was the only non-quarterback MVP finalist, had +10,000 odds of winning the award.

Mahomes had the second-highest odds by Draftkings of winning the Super Bowl MVP. Hurts took first place, while Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce went third.
