Patrick Mahomes explains why watching Bengals QB Joe Burrow is valuable for him and the Chiefs

When you're the best at what you do, there's only so many others you can observe to take notes from. Thus is the case for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The defending back-to-back Super Bowl MVP is pretty particular when it comes to which fellow passers he takes notice when he's not playing.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow happens to be one of them.

In talking with First Things First host (and known Chiefs superfan) Nick Wright, Mahomes name-dropped Burrow along with Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and C.J. Stroud of the Houston Texas as quarterbacks he enjoys watching. His reasoning for tuning in to see Burrow is actually more for scouting purposes.

"Probably Joe [Burrow]," Mahomes said to round out his short list. "Just because we play the same teams, and so watching him play definitely gives me some ideas of what we can do as an offense."

That's three of the best quarterbacks in the AFC and the entire NFL if we're being honest. Stroud may need to have another season like the one that earned him Rookie of the Year honors last season, but he's certainly on his way to the upper echelon of QB play with Allen, Mahomes, and Burrow.

Mahomes' logic for keeping eyes on Burrow tracks, at least from the past two years. Both the Chiefs and Bengals played first-place schedules from 2022-23 as reigning AFC division winners, so there was crossover with their respective schedules for those years.

The Bengals aren't playing a first-place schedule this season, but they are playing the Chiefs and the rest of the AFC West. Mahomes should still have his eyes on the Bengals against his closest rivals when he can.

In total, the Bengals and Chiefs have seven common opponents across their respective 17-game schedules.

That gives Mahomes ample opportunities to watch and scout #9 for Cincinnati go to work, and vice versa.
