Patrick Mahomes has a powerful message to the Kansas City Chiefs rookies coming into OTAs
Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs have done as good a job as any team of getting their rookies to contribute in their first year to a winning team. No one else has done a better job, and I don't think I need an example, but the perfect one would be the year before last with the secondary, George Karlaftis and Isiah Pacheco in particular.

When the Chiefs triumphed over the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2023 Super Bowl, their secondary played a pivotal role not only in that game but also in the playoff games leading up to it. Notably, rookies George Karlaftis and Isiah Pacheco also made significant contributions by rushing the passer and running the ball effectively.

Last year, they didn't have as good of a rookie class in terms of production in your first year, but you won't have that every season, especially when you are on a Super Bowl team. But that doesn't mean the class is bad. The same can be said about this class. While we may not get great production from them all, that doesn't mean they are bad.

The transition from college to the pros is a daunting one, with a barrage of new experiences and challenges. It's a path that demands resilience and adaptability. But who better to guide these rookies through this maze of uncertainties than Patrick Mahomes?

"I think it's to try to be great every single day," Mahomes said Wednesday. "They have to learn how to work – that's every class that comes in, every group of rookies – you have to push them to be great. That's why you see me over there yelling, 'Finish,' and you see me talk to those guys after every single play. We know that those guys are what is going to keep us going, keep this thing going. We're looking obviously at this year but in future years as well.

"We want to make sure we push them to be great every single day, having those guys – a lot of talented guys who have displayed a lot of talent so far, but they have to continue to be great because they have to be good fast. It's not like we're waiting for them to develop to be a great player; we want them to be great the first day they step on the football field. I think our coaches and the players around really push guys to be great every single day."

Mahomes, with his impeccable leadership, always knows the right words to inspire the rookies. This rookie class is a treasure trove of potential, with the possibility of two immediate starters: Xavier Worthy and Kingsley Suamataia. Their future contributions could be game-changing for the Chiefs.

Already, Mahomes has invested his time in the offseason with some of these rookies, engaging in workouts and honing their skills. We can rest assured that Mahomes, with his unwavering commitment, will steer these rookies toward success.
