Winners of three straight games and coming off a dominant 28-7 victory over the Washington Commanders, the Kansas City Chiefs have finally clicked as a team. Despite Patrick Mahomes throwing two interceptions and getting sacked three times, the Chiefs overcame his mistakes to put themselves in a good position heading into a tough three-game stretch.
After getting intercepted twice in the first two drives of the game (the first time in his career), Mahomes would settle down and throw for 299 yards (25-for-34) and three touchdowns while adding 30 yards rushing on four carries for a total of 329 yards on the day. The defense did its job, intercepting and sacking the Commander’s backup quarterback, Marcus Mariota, two times each.
The Chiefs are firing on all cylinders, and Mahomes said they've grown as a team even though they got off to a slow start offensively.
"It shows the growth that we've had as a team," said Mahomes to Grant Gordon of NLF.com, after piloting the Chiefs to their fifth win by double digits this season, already one more than last season's total. "Offense, defense and special teams, I think we're getting better and better each and every week. Even though we didn't start the way we wanted to today offensively, it showed that we can battle through adversity and still continue to play the brand of football that we want to play. We'll have to continue to get better and better."
Showing they can battle through tough spots in games, Mahomes and the Chiefs have a grueling three-game stretch ahead of them. They'll face the Buffalo Bills (5-2) in a rematch of last season's AFC Championship Game, the Denver Broncos (6-2) who have one of the best defenses in the league and finally the Indianapolis Colts (7-1), who have been the best all-around team.
The Bills, like the Chiefs, are coming off a commanding victory of their own over the Carolina Panthers, 40-9, and reestablished their running game, which will be a key component of their game plan heading into next Sunday.
The Chiefs only allowed 60 yards to one of the best rushing teams in the league in the Commanders, who have rushed for 1,102 yards on the season. Facing the best team at running the football, the Bills (1,151 yards), things should be challenging, but Mahomes feels they're up for it after their second-half performance.
"This is going to be a great challenge this next week and we'll have to start faster," Mahomes said, via Gordon, “but I was proud of how the guys responded in that second half."
