Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby dropped some insight into his relationship with Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce on an episode of The Hard Count with J.D. Pickell on Thursday.
Earlier this year, upon transferring to Texas Tech from Cincinnati, Sorsby heard from Mahomes after going public with the news online. The pair have seemingly connected since, and Sorsby told Pickell he hopes to train with both Mahomes and Kelce later this summer ahead of his fifth and final season of college ball.
Mahomes and Kelce each reached out to Sorsby via phone after the top quarterback transfer officially committed to the Red Raiders on Jan. 4.
“Alright, this is pretty sick – Mahomes texting me out of nowhere is a pretty cool deal, so I’ve kind of built a relationship a little bit with him,” Sorsby said. “Travis has texted me, like slid up on my story whenever I announced I’d committed (to Texas Tech), and Kelce was like ‘You’re dead to me,’ laughing emojis and all this stuff, so I still talk to both of those guys decently regularly, I know they got busy lives going on but I’m sure I’ll be able to train with them this summer.”
Of course, the concept of transferring schools, at least in the mode in which Sorsby lept from Cincy to Lubbock, wasn’t in the cards for Mahomes or Kelce during their respective college careers. Mahomes and Kelce each played three seasons at Texas Tech and Cincinnati, then a member of the Big East.
Cincinnati is currently suing Sorsby over a disputed $1 million exit fee following his departure from the school. The lawsuit claims Sorsby violated the terms of his NIL agreement by not paying the fee within 30 days of transferring, according to reporting by Mark Schlabach of ESPN.
Regardless of what happens there, Sorsby will make plenty in his one season with Texas Tech, paying the Texas native a reported $5 million or more for his talents, to cover that legal bill and perhaps a weekend trip to visit Mahomes and crew.
