Patrick Mahomes Is A Very Happy Man On Tuesday

Patrick Mahomes seems overjoyed by Tuesday's significant Kansas Chiefs news.

The Chiefs officially signed Trey Smith to a long-term extension. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Smith received a four-year, $94 million deal with $70 million guaranteed, making him the NFL's highest-paid guard.

Mahomes appeared to celebrate the news by posting a smiling emoji on social media.

The star quarterback is understandably happier knowing Smith will stay in Kansas City beyond 2025.

Smith has started 80 of 81 games (playoffs included) since the Chiefs made him a sixth-round pick in 2021. He allowed zero sacks and five quarterback hits in 1,115 snaps last season, committing just nine penalties.

Pro Football Focus graded him 14th among 136 qualified guards last season. Smith followed his first Pro Bowl nod by playing in his third consecutive Super Bowl.

Kansas City kept Smith away from free agency by exercising the franchise tag earlier this offseason. The 26-year-old would have played on a one-year, $23.4 million deal had he not reached an extension by Tuesday's deadline.

Mahomes no longer has to worry about losing an offensive mainstay next year. Smith will keep anchoring an offensive line that added left tackle Jaylon Moore and left guard Kingsley Suamataia alongside All-Pro center Creed Humphrey and right tackle Jawaan Taylor. The Chiefs also drafted tackle Josh Simmons with the No. 32 overall pick.

Despite Smith's strong 2024, the unit will look to improve this season. The ground game averaged just 4.0 yards per carry, and Mahomes got sacked six times in a lopsided Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

A newly paid Smith will lead the Chiefs to Brazil to open their 2025 season against the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday, Sept. 5.
