Patrick Mahomes' latest comments show Hollywood Brown is exactly what Chiefs' offense has been missing
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs have lacked a reliable deep threat in their offense since Tyreek Hill's days with the club.

That hasn't stopped the team from winning Super Bowls, but it has certainly diminished the offense's ability to be quite as explosive as it once was. One offseason addition could help change that.

Speaking to reporters following the team's third practice session of OTAs, Patrick Mahomes was asked about what he's seen from the team's top free agent acquisition Hollywood Brown.

"I've seen it the entire offseason from working in Texas until here," Mahomes said. "I remember the first day, I told guys like Drue (Tranquill) like, 'Hey, he tracks (the ball) down the field well. He can really go.' I think you all saw it today, I'm giving him chances downfield and he's making the plays happen. And the more plays he makes, the more we'll continue to give him chances. It's a good addition to our offense."

Chiefs making a concerted effort to bring back the deep passing game

Mahomes found Hollywood Brown in the middle of the red zone on a deep pass during team drills in practice on Tuesday. That throw and play is part of a concerted effort to get back to their roots and add some more explosive plays to the offense. Think 2018 Chiefs and not 2023 Chiefs — that seems to be the goal that Andy Reid and Matt Nagy have in mind.

"I think y'all saw today, we tried to throw a few more deep passes," Mahomes said. "Get back to the deep game and stuff like that. We've done a great job of mastering the intermediate and short stuff, but we want to get back to having that part of the offense as well. Coach (Andy Reid) is really pushing us to push it down the field. It's hard to do against our defense, but we're trying to make it happen."

As for Brown's role in making a more explosive offense happen? With Xavier Worthy sidelined during the early portion of OTAs due to a hamstring injury, it sounds as if Brown has quickly taken up the mantle as the team's deep threat.

"Looks like he and Pat (Mahomes) are developing nice chemistry there," Chiefs HC Andy Reid said. "We'll just take it step by step as we go."
