Tyrann Mathieu's surprise retirement from the NFL on Tuesday sent shockwaves through the football world — and Patrick Mahomes wasted no time letting fans know exactly how he feels.
The Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback called Mathieu “one of the best to ever do it,” paying tribute to the veteran defensive back who played three electrifying seasons in Kansas City from 2019-2021.
Nicknamed the “Honey Badger,” Mathieu, 33, capped his career with his hometown New Orleans Saints but left an unforgettable legacy in Kansas City.
During his time with the Chiefs, he earned a Super Bowl ring (2019), two Pro Bowl selections, and two first-team All-Pro honors — cementing himself as one of the premier safeties of his generation.

A knack for game-changing plays has set Mathieu apart throughout his career. The numbers back Mahomes’ claim:
It is hard to compare across eras, but at a minimum Mathieu is on a short list of the best defensive backs of his time. Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee agreed, placing him on the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.
Beyond the stats, Mathieu’s fiery leadership made him the heart of every defense he anchored.
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce once described him as “the fire within the team… everybody rallies behind him.”

"He's such a great leader on this team and obviously a special football player," Mahomes said in 2021, urging Mathieu to stay in Kansas City.
As NFL fans reflect on Mathieu’s incredible run from LSU standout to Super Bowl champion, Mahomes’ heartfelt tribute about his former teammate spoke volumes.
