Patrick Mahomes returning to Texas for a Thanksgiving week matchup against the Dallas Cowboys always brings out a little extra noise. This year, it also shines a light on someone who played a massive role in shaping him long before Kansas City ever knew his name.

His mother, Randi Mahomes, has always talked proudly about where she comes from, and the Chiefs’ trip to Arlington has brought her Texas upbringing back into the conversation.

Randi’s story starts in the small East Texas town of Troup, a place with roughly 1,100 people and a pace of life that moves a little slower than the NFL world her son lives in today. She grew up in a home filled with family, surrounded by two older sisters, an older brother and parents who still live in the same house she was raised in.

With 56 first cousins, Randi was never lonely. Her family still gathers for weddings, graduations and even simple weekends together. It’s part of why she often says she values showing up for the people she loves.

Growing Up Small Town Strong

Randi went to the same tiny school from kindergarten through high school. She has talked about how important that stability was. Friends weren’t just friends, they were part of her everyday life. One of those childhood friends is still her best friend now, something she says proves how meaningful those years were. She believes that the closeness of Troup and her parents’ influence shaped her into the woman she is today.

After high school, life took a sharp turn when she met former MLB pitcher Pat Mahomes. She didn’t know he was a pro athlete when they first connected. They started a family young, and Randi has said she had to grow up quickly once Patrick was born. While marriage to a pro baseball player came with challenges, the two stayed on good terms after divorcing. Her focus never shifted away from being a mom first.

Randi worked hard raising Patrick, Jackson and Mia, all while juggling her job at Hollytree Country Club, where she has been an event planner since 2005. She has said that her work left an imprint on her kids.

Patrick developed a love for golf, Mia picked up interests across nearly every sport and Jackson learned the social skills needed to host events. Through it all, faith stayed intact. She made sure her kids were raised in the church, something she still practices when her travel schedule allows.

How Her Roots Connect to Patrick’s Rise

Mahomes’ path to football stardom didn’t start in a big city or a private quarterback camp. It began on an East Texas baseball diamond, where he threw 93 miles per hour as a high school pitcher and spent fall nights balancing football with baseball dreams. He wasn’t a polished quarterback from the start.

He played safety at Whitehouse High School before deciding to give quarterbacking a real shot. By his junior year, he tossed for nearly 4,000 passing yards and 46 touchdowns, all while maintaining the calm, grounded presence that felt a lot like the home he grew up in.

Patrick often talks about how his parents shaped him. The creativity he plays with, the poise he shows and the no-quit attitude that defines his late-game comebacks can all be traced back to the steady environment Randi created. She pushed him to show up, care for others and be present for the people around him. Those values still follow him onto the field every Sunday.

Homecoming Feel Ahead of Chiefs-Cowboys

This week carries a little extra emotion for the Mahomes family. The Chiefs sit at 6-5 and need a strong push to stay in the AFC playoff race. The Cowboys are fighting for their own postseason position. The game itself is massive, but the setting adds another layer to the Thanksgiving Day game.

Arlington is only a few hours from where Randi raised Patrick. Their extended family still lives across East Texas, and moments like this bring everyone back together the same way they always have.

Randi has been sharing memories, family posts and pieces of her Texas roots online as the game approaches. It’s a reminder that Mahomes’ journey didn’t begin in the spotlight. It began in a town where everyone knows everyone, where family is never far away and where hard work matters more than anything.

As the Chiefs take the field against Dallas, it’s impossible not to think about the long road from Troup to Texas Tech to the NFL. A road built on family, faith and a mother who stayed consistent through every chapter. And this week, that story gets its moment back in the state where it all started and in front of a massive audience.
