We often think of Patrick Mahomes as "clever'' and "savvy'' and "sly.''
But it turns out, he's pretty flat-out smart, too.
Before the Texas native became an all-time great quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, he was putting up huge numbers for Texas Tech.
In large part due to the tutelage of coach Kliff Kingsbury (another Texas native who's now thriving as the Washington Commanders coordinator), Mahomes become a legend in Lubbock.
Somehow, not everybody in the NFL thought all of his work would translate. So he lasted until pick No. 10 in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, which now figures to go down as one of the all-time steals.
Maybe the Chiefs knew something others didn't about his mental makeup ... which is revealed in part by what we now know about his having performed quite well in the classroom.
It is being reported that Mahomes had a 3.91 GPA at Texas Tech. His mother, Randi, was awfully proud of his academic achievements.
"He started getting college credits at Tyler Junior College when he was still in high school," Randi recently said. "I admit I am a proud mom. I am very proud of his athletic achievements.
"However, I am more proud of his scholastic achievements."
Mahomes now has a chance to win his fourth Super Bowl ring before the age of 30. ... and to help the Chiefs over the Eagles in the Super Bowl in a way that would give KC an unprecedented three-peat.
Do that, and he joins Tom Brady in the GOAT narrative. And if it happens?
It will quite possibly be the result of Mahomes being "clever'' and "savvy'' and "sly.''
Oh, and "smart.''
