Patrick Mahomes on 10-year deal: 'I didn't even know NFL contracts did that'

Patrick Mahomes set a new standard for contracts when he signed a 10-year, $503 million contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason. The length of the contract shocked fans, players and even Mahomes himself, who admitted that he was not even aware that contracts could be that long.

"There were two things I said when we went into negotiations: I wanted to keep great players around me and I wanted to have long-term security for my family," Mahomes told CBS Sports. "I certainly wasn't thinking 10 years. I didn't even know NFL contracts did that."

Contract historians would tell Mahomes that he wasn't the first player to sign a 10-year deal, as several quarterbacks, including Drew Bledsoe and Brett Favre, have previously done so. In fact, it's not even the longest a contract has gone, as Donovan McNabb signed a 12-year deal with the Eagles back in 2002. Still, Mahomes' surprise is understandable given how rare these types of contracts are. He is, after all, only the sixth player to sign a deal of 10 years or more.

What perhaps is most shocking is that most people would argue that Mahomes might actually be on the losing side of the deal, as he could surely have signed a shorter contract that may have gotten him an even bigger payday in a few years. But Mahomes seems determined to be the building block of the Chiefs' budding dynasty, so he was willing to make a long-term commitment.  And with one Super Bowl under his belt, he may be well on his way.
