Patrick Mahomes Passed Tom Brady In Unfortunate Super Bowl Stat

Patrick Mahomes passed Tom Brady in one area tonight, and it's not something he's going to want to hear about.

Mahomes came into Super Bowl 59 hoping to engineer the first three-peat in the Super Bowl era. Brady won back-to-back with the New England Patriots but never got a third ring in a row. He did, however, beat Mahomes twice head-to-head in the playoffs, once in the AFC Championship Game for the Pats and also in Super Bowl LV for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But instead of one-upping Brady with a three-peat, Mahomes has surpassed in an unfortunate stat: Super Bowl interceptions. With two picks in the first half tonight, including a pick-6 by Philadelphia Eagles rookie Cooper DeJean, Mahomes now has seven interceptions in five Super Bowls.

Brady only threw six in 10 appearances. Oh yeah, the Chiefs are also down 24-0 at intermission.

Through the first two quarters, Mahomes is only 6-of-14 passing for 33 yards and two interceptions. His first INT was returned for six points, and his second one set up an immediate touchdown on a Jalen Hurts to A.J. Brown connection.

Mahomes has also been sacked three times and has looked uncomfortable since the opening drive, hearkening back to Super Bowl LV four years ago, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers harassed the two-time MVP during their 31-9 title romp.

Even that night, Mahomes threw for 270 yards, which he's really going to have to work to get to tonight. If this keeps up, someone on the Philadelphia defense might be winning the Super Bowl MVP Award later.

Either that, or Mahomes' counterpart Hurts will win MVP. The former second-round pick has looked calm all night, leading the Eagles offense.

Hurts scored the first touchdown on a 1-yard "Tush Push," and his hookup with Brown made it 24-0 late in the second quarter. We'll see if he can add to the margin in the second half.
