With minutes to play in Week 15, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went down hard between Cleveland Browns defenders. When he got up, the 29-year-old signal-caller limped off the field with what was to be revealed as a high ankle sprain injury.
Carson Wentz entered the game to play in the final minutes on Sunday. After the game, head coach Andy Reid said Mahomes could have finished the contest, but he didn't return as a precaution.
The Chiefs have a short week, with the Houston Texans scheduled for Saturday, which gives Mahomes less recovery time. When asked about his injury status on Tuesday, Mahomes said he had to push himself and offered a blunt take on his desire to play, per Nate Taylor of The Athletic.
"I’m a competitor. I want to go out there and play.”

Mahomes said that challenging himself is part of the game, and he has to test his body for the sake of the team. If he can't play, Mahomes believes his teammates have full confidence in Wentz to step up.
Wentz went 2-for-2 for 20 passing yards in his limited Week 15 playing time. This is his first year with the Chiefs after being with four teams over his last four seasons.
The 31-year-old last started a game in Week 18 with the Los Angeles Rams against the San Francisco 49ers. L.A. won that game, 21-20, and Wentz passed for 163 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
