Patrick Mahomes Reacts to Chiefs Announcement on Friday

Patrick Mahomes has finished his ninth season with the Kansas City Chiefs, and for the first time since he took over the starting role in 2018, his team missed the NFL playoffs. Still, Mahomes had another solid year despite missing the last few games with a torn ACL, completing 315 of 502 passes for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Since the offseason began, Kansas City has made many changes to Andy Reid's coaching staff. Running backs coach Todd Pinkston and wide receivers coach Connor Embree were fired. And defensive quality control coach Louie Addazio and assistant defensive line coach Alex Whittingham departed for college football.

The Chiefs have also appeared to part ways with two other offensive assistants as well, including Mark Deleone and Kevin Saxton, both of whom are no longer on the team website. But those weren't the biggest moves in Kansas City so far.

Matt Nagy began his NFL coaching career in 2008, joining Reid’s staff with the Philadelphia Eagles as an offensive assistant. After five seasons, he followed Reid to Kansas City and later became the offensive coordinator in 2016. Nagy then spent four years as the head coach of the Chicago Bears before returning to Kansas City in 2022, reclaiming the offensive coordinator role the following year.

But since the regular season has ended, Nagy has been exploring other head-coaching roles with numerous NFL teams, including the Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens. And while he hasn't found a job just yet, the Chiefs were quick to find his replacement, bringing back Eric Bieniemy to fill Nagy's offensive coordinator role. Bieniemy won two Super Bowls as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022.

And on Friday, Kansas City made it official, announcing that Nagy will not be returning for the 2026 NFL season. This prompted Mahomes to leave a message for his former coach on his Instagram story.

"Thank you coach for everything!" Mahomes wrote. "Made me a better player and man! ."

With the hiring of Bieniemy, Kansas City has filled its most important vacancy but still has work to do to round out Reid’s staff for the 2026 season.
