Patrick Mahomes was forced to miss the final three games of the 2025 NFL season after suffering a torn ACL, watching as the Kansas City Chiefs finished 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the first time in his career. Still, the quarterback had another solid season, completing 315-of-502 passes for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Now, the Chiefs have entered the offseason with some concerns at pass catcher for Mahomes. Tight end Travis Kelce is still pondering retirement, while star wide receiver Rashee Rice faces a new lawsuit . Wideouts Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster have also become unrestricted free agents. But as free agency and the NFL Draft approach, there is one receiver Mahomes would love to see in Kansas City.
Reggie Virgil spent his first three seasons of college football with the Miami (OH) RedHawks, totaling 43 catches for 878 yards and 10 touchdowns while earning All-MAC honors. But for his senior season in 2025, the 21-year-old wide receiver from Apopka, Florida, decided to take it up a notch, transferring to the Big 12’s Texas Tech Red Raiders, Mahomes’ former school.
In his lone season at Texas Tech, Virgil helped the Red Raiders reach the College Football Playoff, recording a career-high 57 catches for 705 yards and six touchdowns. His performance was strong enough to earn him a second-round projection in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft by some outlets.
Speaking at the NFL Combine, Virgil revealed he had already met with the Chiefs and discussed what Mahomes has said about him. And according to Blitz Sports Media’s Ryan Linkletter, Virgil also noted that "Mahomes is already trying to get him to Kansas City" as well.
"(Team up with Patrick Mahomes) would be everything, him being a Tech guy too," Virgil said. " He reached out... I was at the Senior Bowl and it was his assistant quarterbacks coach, and he told the quarterbacks coach, 'Virgil is a guy for sure." So, just knowing he thinks highly of me, too, already, so it's cool. I would definitely learn a lot, be a better player for sure."
