Netflix dropped the docuseries Quarterback, Wednesday. And the candid scenes with Patrick Mahomes immediately started going viral.
And why not? Take this one from this past January. Let’s set the scene. It’s the weekend of the second round of the playoffs. The Chiefs quickly dispensed with Jacksonville. Meanwhile, the bigger game was in Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, NY. The Bills were entertaining the Bengals. It was Josh Allen against Joe Burrow, two of the brightest young stars in the NFL this side of Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs were getting the winner of the game. Mahomes was entertaining friends at his home after the Jaguars victory. And someone asked Mahomes his preference. The quarterback’s response — bring it Bengals.
“I think we match up better vs. the Bills,” Mahomes said. “But I want to play the Bengals. I mean, just honestly. I just want to play them because we haven’t beaten them, and I’m tired of them talking.”
This is why @Netflix “Quarterback” is so cool to watch. Here is Mahomes at his house after the divisional win over the Jags talking about how he thinks they matchup better vs the #Bills but he wants to play the #bengals because he’s a competitor and is “tired of them talking”. pic.twitter.com/d6bpFoKWCd

And we all know what happened. The Bengals overwhelmed the Bills. And Cincy players continued to yap and trash talk through the week. Even the Cincinnati mayor jumped in the middle of this verbal war. Remember the whole Burrowhead Stadium troll? Bengals cornerback Eli Apple started that one. It’s what happens when a team owns a three-game winning streak against a Super Bowl contender.
The game was a tight one. Patrick Mahomes played on a bad ankle. A Bengals penalty set up the Chiefs for a last-second field goal to give KC a 23-20 win and a Super Bowl berth. And we know what happened in that game. Mahomes and the Chiefs came back to beat the Eagles.
We’re hoping for many more of these matchups, although Mahomes still might prefer Allen and his Bills. In January, 2022, Buffalo and Kansas City put on a thrilling, overtime show. The Chiefs won 42-36. But we’re thinking this Joe Burrow-Patrick Mahomes rivalry is a present day version of Tom Brady–Peyton Manning. Those two legends met five times in the playoffs. Manning bested Brady with a 3-2 record. And, the home team won each time.
After January’s game, Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow met at midfield.
“Many more dog, many more,” Mahomes told Burrow as he patted him on the shoulder. “Hey, helluva game. Good job, bud. You have a helluva career going.”
Burrow told Mahomes: “You too, brother. Go win it now.” Mahomes gave him a “Yes Sir!” And they hugged twice.
NFL fans, we’ve got our fingers crossed that Patrick Mahomes wishes for more games against the Bengals. That would definitely make for fun TV, whether it’s network or Netflix.
In the meantime, check out Quarterback. It also features Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota. But you know that Mahomes is going to have the most fun storylines.
