Patrick Mahomes wants Andy Reid to call one particular play more often

Given their success in recent years, there is not much to complain about with Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs play-calling.

They are consistently one of the most innovative, efficient and best teams in the league, and the duo of Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes always seems to be one step ahead of the rest of the league.

But there is one play that Reid has seemingly removed from the Chiefs' playbook that Mahomes wants to see more of.

That play is the quarterback sneak.

Mahomes talked about that after practice on Thursday and said the Chiefs' lack of quarterback sneaks goes back to the 2019 season when he injured his knee on a sneak, via USA Today's Ed Easton Jr.:

“I’ll always want to because I always say that I haven’t got stopped yet,” said Mahomes. “Because even the one that my knee I got hurt on, I still got the first down. But I’m pretty sure he’s [Andy Reid] not gonna let me do it unless it’s like for the Super Bowl. And so I might have to call my own number in the Super Bowl if we get there.”

Keeping Mahomes healthy is a top priority for the Chiefs because he is the focal point of the offense and the franchise. If he gets injured and misses significant time, it limits what they can do offensively and takes almost all of their juice out of their system.

Not letting him go head-first into the middle of the line is a good way to help cut down on the injury risk. The fact he was injured on that type of play is also the sort of thing that can lead to a reactionary decision by a coach.

It is interesting to see how protective the Chiefs are with Mahomes regarding quarterback sneaks, while another team like the Philadelphia Eagles has made the quarterback sneak a central part of their short-yardage strategy.
