One of the underlying storylines that not many people seemed to be talking about in the lead-up to Super Bowl 59 was the potential for Sunday to be Travis Kelce's last NFL game.
Kelce is signed with the team through 2025. But at 34-years-old with 12 seasons under his belt and plenty of hardware to show for it, it's possible Travis decides to retire and move on to the next phase of his life.
That's something Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke on during last night's postgame media session. Admitting that while it's ultimately Kelce's decision to walk away or not, "He knows he still has a lot of football left."
"I'll let Travis make that decision on his own, man," Mahomes said, via the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "He's given so much to this team and to the NFL and been such a joy, not only for me to work with but for people to watch. He knows he still has a lot of football left in him. You can see it. … He's done enough to be a gold jacket guy and a first-ballot Hall of Famer. … He'll get to spend some time with his family and make that decision on his own."
Travis has accomplished just about everything you could ever want to from a tight end's perspective — three Super Bowl rings, 10 Pro Bowls, seven All-Pro teams and the most 1,000-yard receiving seasons at his position...
And there should be no shortage of off-the-field opportunities whenever he decides to hang them up.
His "New Heights" podcast with his brother Jason is among the most popular in the country right now, and his relationship with Taylor Swift has opened up a lot of other doors for him.
Just last week, Kelce said he loves playing football and that he'd like to hopefully be playing for another three years. And while that may have been a stretch, it's hard to imagine that if he had any thoughts of retiring he'd want to go out like this.
"We'll see what happens," the TE said. "I know I've been setting myself up for other opportunities in my life. That's always been the goal, knowing that football only lasts for so long."
