If you have watched any clips or consumed any content regarding takeaways from Steelers training camp, then you know how dominant the Steelers' defense has been.
Some may say that has more to do with the offense than the defense, but it's clear that this unit is flying around at another level.
Why? Defensive signal caller Patrick Queen explained...
“I think we're farther ahead than last year, but still not where we need to be. It's an everyday grind, everyday battle that we've got to come in and have the mindset to get better, just one percent better," said Queen during camp. "There are days when some people aren't going to have it, and some people are going to have it. The days that people have it, we've got to give it to others and just bring them along. It's a team thing. It's a defensive thing. It's a brotherhood . . .
" . . .Every single day you've got to come out here and grind. It's never going to be given to you. Especially on Sundays, when you're playing against a different team, they don't like you. I think the biggest thing is just being able to get one percent better every single day, know every single detail of the defense inside and out, and just come out and ready to work. Get one percent better every single day.”
What's clear here, if you read between the lines, is that the defensive communication is much better than it has been in the past. 2024 was full of blown coverages and missed assignments. The 2025 version of this defense is valuing something much more: attention to detail.
What's odd about that is that you have this Swiss Army Knife in the defensive backfield now via Jalen Ramsey, and yet there have been minimal blown coverages. You have a defense using more personnel packages and sub-defenses than ever before, yet they look more buttoned up.
It's just camp, and time will tell if it carries over to the season, but the lack of execution should be a thing of the past if the team truly uses this mindset going forward.
