Through their first eight games, the Denver Broncos have shown that either their offense or defense can carry them victory on any given day. For example, they beat the New York Jets 13-11 in Week 6 before defeating the New York Giants 33-32 and the Dallas Cowboys 44-22.
However, star cornerback Patrick Surtain II left the latter contest early due to injury on Sunday. The 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year headlines Denver's defense, so the offense may have to pick up the slack for as long as he's out.
An update on that front emerged on Monday, via NFL reporter Jordan Schultz.
"Sources: Broncos star CB Patrick Surtain II is dealing with a pectoral injury and is expected to miss 4–6 weeks," he reported. "No surgery is needed, but I’m told the reigning Defensive Player of the Year will get a second opinion this week to confirm the timeline."
"Patrick Surtain II suffered multiple injuries in the first half on Sunday vs the, but the pectoral injury was the main concern," he continued. "Overall, it could’ve been much worse. Looks like roughly a month on the sidelines before Denver gets its superstar corner back."

Losing a star cornerback for an extended period is difficult for any team, as it takes pressure off of opposing passing attacks. However, Denver can keep up with anyone in the NFL offensively.
The Broncos rank ninth in football with 356.9 yards per game and 10th with 25.9 points, per ESPN. They're also fourth with 137.8 rushing yards, while quarterback Bo Nix ranks seventh with 1,803 passing yards. The 25-year-old is also tied for fifth with 15 touchdown tosses.
Denver's ground game is led by veteran tailback J.K. Dobbins, who ranks third with 634 rushing yards. Meanwhile, No. 1 wideout Courtland Sutton ranks 10th with 536 receiving yards.
This arsenal of weapons has helped the Broncos score 77 points over the last two games, and they'll be hard to beat even without Surtain if they keep that pace moving forward. Either way, they can afford to drop a couple of games, as they lead the AFC West and are third in the conference at 6-2.
Up next for Denver is a road matchup with the Houston Texans in Week 9. The game will start at 1:00 p.m. ET and be broadcast on Fox.
