Patriots bring in former HC as part of revamped offensive staff

The New England Patriots are adding to their revamped coaching staff on offense again, bringing in former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo.

It was first reported on Saturday that the Patriots were "in talks" to add McAdoo.

After three years working in the college game from 2001-03, one season as an offensive assistant/quality control coach with the New Orleans Saints and one year with the San Francisco 49ers in the same role, the 46-year-old spent eight seasons with the Green Bay Packers from 2006-2013. McAdoo was the Packers tight ends coach from 2006-2011, earning one Super Bowl ring, and was the quarterbacks coach from 2012-13.

He then joined the Giants as their offensive coordinator for the 2014 and 2015 campaigns before serving as New York's head coach for 28 games during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The G-Men went 13-15 during McAdoo's time at the helm before he was fired after Week 13.

After two years away from coaching, he was the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterbacks coach in 2020 and a consultant with the Dallas Cowboys in 2021.

McAdoo was hired as the Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator in January 2021 but only lasted one season in that role.

During his two seasons as the Giants OC, the team ranked 13th and sixth in scoring, while they regressed to 26th and 31st when he was the head coach. The Panthers were 20th in the league in points per game (20.4) in 2022, as star running back Christian McCaffrey was limited to six games and the group started three different quarterbacks (Baker Mayfield, P.J. Walker, Sam Darnold).

New England is in dire need of a jolt on offense and new head coach Jerod Mayo is certainly more of a defensive-minded leader.

The Patriots finished 31st in the league in scoring last season (13.9 points per game) but have the No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft, where Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels could be available. Fans in Foxborough are hoping a smart draft pick and the additions of McAdoo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt can lead to a quick turnaround.
