Patriots Cautiously Optimistic About Christian Barmore’s Health

The New England Patriots were one of three teams that got to start their first day of off-season workouts on Monday, April 7.

This was a chance for the Patriots to come together as a team and get ready for the 2025 NFL Season through workouts, conditioning drills, and meetings. New England saw several returning veterans, and new players got an early start to the season.

Among the players who joined the opportunity to work out and participate in some team activities was defensive tackle Christian Barmore.

He is looking to be back safely on the field after playing only two games last season. In late July, he was diagnosed with blood clots. He was cleared to play again on Nov. 19 but was placed back on non-football IL due to recurring symptoms.

In the two games played, Barmore accounted for five solo tackles, one sack, and one tackle for loss.

He was one season removed from his best season in 2023, accounting for 64 total tackles, 39 solo tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, six pass breakups, and one forced fumble. This helped push the Patriots and Barmore into a four-year, $83 million extension in late April last year.

On Monday, the Patriots were happy to see Barmore work out with the team, but they know they have to be extremely cautious with him and his blood clots. Head coach Mike Vrabel spoke more about Barmore’s health and progress to NBCS Boston’s Phil Perry.

"We'll continue to evaluate him," Mike Vrabel said last week. "It's something very serious...especially when you're talking about something like blood clots. We're going to have a great plan for him."

There are positive signs of his recovery as he was having normal workouts with the team. The Patriots will have more tests on Barmore to ensure his life isn’t at any risk. Afterward, they will see when he could be perfectly healthy to be a full-time player.

The Patriots are optimistic for a complete season rebound in 2025, but they want to protect Barmore most of all.
