Patriots Coach Gets Honest About QB Mac Jones Before Week 17
David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

Mac Jones is entering a period of uncertainty in his NFL journey. Initially named the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots, he faced multiple benchings in favor of Bailey Zappe. Eventually, Zappe took over the starting role, leading the team to notable victories against the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Denver Broncos.

Bill Belichick’s positive response to Zappe after the Christmas Day win spoke volumes.

As the season concludes with Zappe solidifying his position as the starter, questions loom over Jones’ future with the Patriots. However, on Tuesday, offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien took a moment to express his confidence in the third-year quarterback.

“I feel good about Mac Jones. I really do. I think Mac Jones is a smart guy. He’s a very hard worker,” O’Brien remarked. “He’s handled this situation well, being a good teammate throughout.”

“These are things that happen in the course of many careers, right? You have ups and downs, and he’s approached it the right way. He’s working hard, and I believe in Mac. So I think Mac’s gonna be just fine.”

Heading into the final year of his rookie deal in 2024, Jones’s future with the Patriots remains uncertain. Zappe’s strong performance suggests he has earned another year in New England, and the team is anticipated to pick up a quarterback in the draft, potentially relegating Jones to the third-string position if he stays.

The most pragmatic solution appears to be a trade or release, allowing Jones to explore opportunities with another team, possibly as a backup.

Despite a standout rookie season, his performance declined in the second year and hit a low point in the third season. Over three seasons, Mac Jones boasts 864 completions with a completion percentage of 66.1%, amassing 8,918 passing yards and 46 touchdowns in 42 games. On the rushing front, he has accumulated 117 yards with one rushing touchdown.
