Patriots’ David Andrews immediately addresses retirement speculation after 2023 season

If Sunday’s game against the New York Jets was the final game of David Andrews’ career, that would certainly be news to the New England Patriots center.

Andrews expressed a willingness to continue playing football following Sunday’s loss, which dropped the Patriots to 4-13 and ended their 2023 season.

“I think I’ve still got some in the tank,” Andrews said when asked if any of the emotion from Sunday’s game was tied to the uncertainty around his future.

Andrews did leave the door slightly ajar to possibly change his mind and retire as well.

“We’ll see,” Andrews said. “I’m tired. I’m sore. It’s been a long year. I want to go home, go back to Georgia. I’m going to sit on my tractor, with my son, take him deer hunting and I’m going to get back to work and see where it goes from there.”

What David Andrews said about Bill Belichick’s future with the Patriots

While Andrews is under contract and seems to want to return to playing next season, the future of other members of the organization remains unclear. Bill Belichick has been the subject of hot seat rumors for multiple months, with recent reports indicating that he’ll be fired at season’s end.

Andrews even admitted that he isn’t sure what will happen with his coach following Sunday’s game.

“I don’t know,” Andrews told reporters when asked about Belichick’s future. “We’ll see. I think there’s always change and there’s always turnover, and I just play the game, so I talk about the game. And that’s it.”

But Andrews treated the end of Sunday’s game with Belichick the same way as he did in every other game.

“Shook his hand like I always do,” Andrews said when asked if he shared a special moment with Belichick after the game.

Regardless of what happens though, Andrews acknowledged that the end of the season is tough.

“Yeah you know, there’s finality to everything,” Andrews said. “Obviously it won’t be the same next year and the results weren’t what we wanted this year, I think everyone knows that. But the work, the time you spend with the guys, it’s tough to see it end. It’s part of it but it’s always tough.”
