Patriots' Drake Maye Praises Standout Undrafted Free Agent

There are a few names that have stood out at New England Patriots OTAs and mini-camp so far. Stefon Diggs looks smooth and doesn't appear to be coming off a torn ACL. Christian Gonzalez looks like he is continuing to trend towards being one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. And surprisingly, Efton Chism III has been one of the best receivers at Patriots camp. Chism has been making plays on offense, has been a reliable target, and is even playing some special teams as well.

Not only have the coaches taken notice of Chism's play, but the players have too. Patriots second-year quarterback Drake Maye commented on Chism in an interview with the media yesterday. Maye said that Chism had "feels like 50 catches in OTAs." Chism had some of the most targets out of all Patriots' receivers, and he even had a day where he brought in seven catches.

He was heavily involved in the offense, getting a lot of targets with the second and third teams. He had multiple hookups with Josh Dobbs and Ben Wooldridge throughout OTAs, especially at the beginning of camp. However, once he showed that he is a real threat to make the roster, he started getting some reps with Maye as well.

Chism is a 5'10 198-pound wide receiver out of Eastern Washington. He played five years there, where he totaled 3,795 yards on 341 catches and 37 touchdowns. His best season was his last, where he had 120 catches for 1,311 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Chism and a strong and competitive receiver who lays it all out on the line. He has great hands, he knows how to make people miss with the ball in his hand, and he doesn't mind running right through them if he has to. His toughness and competitive spirit make it no surprise that he is making a name for himself so far this offseason.

Chism has a real chance of making the roster or at least the practice squad. The Patriots' receiving room is stacked with young talent, and Chism has easily put himself in the mix. He is fighting an uphill battle, having to compete against players like second-round pick Ja'Lynn Polk, second-year receiver Javon Baker, and veteran receiver Kendrick Bourne for a spot. The team will probably keep around six receivers, and it seems like Stefon Diggs, Kyle Williams, Demario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, and Mack Hollins may already have spots waiting for them. The leaves one spot left, and a lot of talent fighting for it.

The Patriots still have the rest of mini-camp, training camp, and preseason before they make the final roster. The next couple of months are going to be crucial for Chism if he wants to make the roster. As it gets closer to the season, the practices will get more intense, and preseason is where Chism will get to show if his hard work is going to translate on the field.

With the praise he has gotten already from staff, teammates, and even his starting quarterback, it looks like he is ready to take on the challenge. The Patriots have had a history of developing late-round picks and finding undrafted free agent gems. Chism may be the next name added to that list if he continues his great play and hard work throughout the offseason.
