The seriousness of the shoulder issue that caused second-year New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye to be a limited practice participant last week remained a significant talking point when he sat down to speak with media members during the "Super Bowl XL Opening Night" festivities.
It sounds like some rest is just what Maye needed.
"I think I turned a corner landing on the flight," Maye said about his shoulder, per Chris Mason of MassLive. "I felt good from the flight and throwing out there today, I think it turned the corner, and I really had no doubt in being 100 percent for the game. This is the Super Bowl. We get two weeks to prepare for it and do whatever we got to do to get it right. I’ve got confidence and feel good."
This past Thursday, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel insisted that Maye's shoulder responded "favorably" before the signal-caller missed Friday's practice due to an illness. Maye seemed to land on his throwing shoulder in the third quarter of New England's 10-7 AFC Championship Game win over the Denver Broncos, but neither he nor Vrabel has confirmed a new injury was suffered that afternoon.
As has been the case since last week, Maye and Vrabel both downplayed any shoulder-related storylines on Monday.
"I feel good," Maye continued. "I’ll be just fine. I threw a good bit. I threw as much as I would at a normal practice. I felt great and looking forward to getting back out there Wednesday and Thursday for practice again, and Friday, and get ready for a normal week of prep."
Per Kevin Patra of the NFL's website, Vrabel added that he "thought it was a crisp practice for Drake and for everybody else" on Monday. Meanwhile, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said he does not expect Maye will be limited during this coming Sunday's matchup versus the Seattle Seahawks.
As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook continued to list the Patriots as 4.5-point underdogs for their Super Bowl XL showdown against Seattle.
