Patriots Extend TE Hunter Henry

Henry and the Pats agreed to a two-year deal on Monday, as first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. This pact is worth $16MM in base value and has the potential to reach $20MM, ESPN’s Adam Schefter adds. Hunter secured $14.5MM in guarantees, including a $4.2MM signing bonus. The news of his extension has been confirmed by a team announcement.

After playing on the franchise tag for his fifth and final Chargers season, Henry signed in New England during his first trip to free agency. The former second-rounder played out a three-year pact before electing to remain with the Patriots on a deal of the same length in 2024. Henry was owed $8.5MM for the final season of that agreement, but another contract is now in store.

Durability has been seen throughout Henry’s New England tenure. The 31-year-old has missed just four regular-season games over the past five seasons, and he will be counted on to remain a key presence on offense moving forward. Henry set a new career high in receiving yards (728) in 2025, recording 60 catches and seven touchdowns along the way. His connection with quarterback Drake Maye is likely to play an important role in New England’s efforts to return to the Super Bowl this year.

Maye’s second NFL season resulted in a runner-up finish in MVP voting, raising expectations for himself personally and the Patriots in general. Another strong showing on offense would help the team build off 2025’s success, and Henry figures to be a central figure in that regard. The receiver position remains one to watch for New England as roster cuts approach, but stability at the tight end spot has been ensured with this new Henry pact.

New England added Julian Hill to the fold on a three-year deal in free agency, but he landed on injured reserve at the start of June. That means Hill will not play this season, adding to the importance of Henry remaining in place and allowing for backup options like Jack Westover and third-round rookie Eli Raridon to carve out offensive roles. Regardless of how the depth chart shakes out, Henry will be able to continue serving as a consistent figure beyond 2026.
