Patriots front-office execs could reportedly join Bill Belichick with new team

After parting ways with Bill Belichick after 24 years, the New England Patriots are looking for a new general manager as well as head coach.

As Belichick begins interviewing with potential new employers (he’s already met with the Atlanta Falcons), some have speculated he will bring some assistant coaches from his New England staff with him to his next team, and Boston Sports Journal’s Mike Giardi even reported a few members of the Patriots front office could also follow Belichick as well.

“I did hear from two prominent league sources who believe (director of scouting Eliot) Wolf and (director of player personnel) Matt Groh will eventually land wherever Belichick does,” Giardi wrote. “Admittedly, I had not considered that. Perhaps we’ll get a better sense of it in the coming days and weeks.”

During head coach Jerod Mayo’s introductory news conference on Wednesday, Patriots owner Robert Kraft didn’t offer specifics on how the team’s front office would be structured. He did say his plan involved focusing on collaboration and finding the person who aligned with the Pats’ vision.

“We'll probably start doing interviews and looking at people from the outside,” Kraft said. “But my bias has always been in my companies to develop a culture from within where we understand one another.”

Kraft's remarks indicate he wants a clean slate from the Belichick regime; however, both Groh, who’s been with the Patriots since 2011, and Wolf, who’s been there since 2020, are in charge of the team’s football operations with Belichick now gone.

It’s possible the team doesn’t hire a new GM and instead uses both Groh and Wolf in a co-leadership role, as reported by Phil Perry of NBC Sports.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Patriots might wait until after the 2024 NFL Draft to officially name a GM, if they hire one at all.
