A Monday report claimed that second-year New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye picked up some kind of injury to his right (throwing) shoulder during the club's 10-7 win over the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.
First-year Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel could have calmed fears held by New England fans during a Tuesday appearance on Boston area sports radio station WEEI. Vrabel instead chose to not pour cold water over the Maye-related rumors.
"There’s not a player on our team that’s 100-percent healthy," Vrabel responded when asked about Maye's shoulder, per Meredith Perri of MassLive.
According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, Maye may have suffered the setback when he landed on his throwing shoulder at the end of a 13-yard run during the third quarter of the Denver game. Maye also took five sacks in the win that punched New England's ticket to a Super Bowl LX showdown with the Seattle Seahawks, which will take place at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara on Feb. 8.
After the win, Maye acknowledged that he was dealing with "some bumps and bruises." He also pointed out that he and his teammates will have an extra week to get right for the Super Bowl.
Maye passed for only 86 yards on 21 attempts during the AFC title game that was impacted by wintry conditions throughout the second half. He also rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown to help New England earn a gritty victory in a harsh road environment.
Vrabel mentioned that Maye and others on the roster have been through quite a lot since the regular season got underway in September. The Broncos finished Week 18 atop the overall AFC standings, meaning New England had to participate in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
"I would imagine we’ll go through the injury report, and whenever we have to turn that in, we’ll turn it in," Vrabel added during the interview. "But nobody’s 100 percent. (It’ll) be our 21st game."
As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Patriots as 4.5-point underdogs against the Seahawks.
