Patriots’ Left Guard Battle: Who Will Protect Maye?

The New England Patriots’ offensive line is a work in progress, with left guard a pivotal question mark as training camp begins. Despite hefty offseason investments, depth and consistency remain concerns.

Evan Lazar from Patriots.com highlights Layden Robinson as a “sneaky storyline” when veterans report on July 22. His 11 rookie starts showed promise, but limited spring reps with the top unit question his fit with coach Mike Vrabel. Robinson’s power could still win the starting role.

Cole Strange leads the left guard race, yet his 2024 struggles—48th in pass protection and 53rd in run blocking—open the door for competition. Sidy Sow, a 2023 fourth-rounder, flashed run-blocking ability but lacks consistency. Both face pressure from Vrabel and offensive line coach Doug Marrone.

Sow’s toughness was criticized last season, with Cutcall Editor ZeeBee noting his struggles against Jacksonville. At 6-foot-5, 318 pounds, Sow should dominate, but his uneven play raises doubts. Robinson, however, impressed in 2024’s Week 1 win over Cincinnati, earning praise from Bleacher Report’s Brandon Thorn for “knockdowns and big blocks."

Robinson’s usage last season—starting four games, benched for seven, then playing every snap late, per Pro Football Reference (https://www.profootballreference.com/players/R/RobiLa00/gamelog/2024/)—leaves his potential unclear. Protecting Maye and supporting rookie left tackle Will Campbell hinges on a reliable left guard. Training camp will determine if Robinson or Sow can claim the role and fortify the Patriots’ line.
