Patriots’ Lineman Named One of NFL Draft’s Biggest Gems in Recent Years

The New England Patriots took a chance on offensive guard Mike Owenu in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and it has paid out dividends for the franchise. Now, Onwenu is being tabbed as one of the biggest gems out of the draft in recent years.

According to Matt Holder of Bleacher Report, expectations for the University of Michigan product were mixed heading into the draft.

"Onwenu was a hulking offensive lineman who stood at 6'3" and nearly 350 pounds with 34⅜" arms. He possessed a few dominant traits but seemed to lack the killer instinct to be a highly touted draft prospect."

Onwenu has both exceeded expectations as a sixth rounder and become a consistent piece along an often struggling offensive line during his time with the Patriots. The veteran guard has started no less than 15 games in each season of his career, playing at a high level while doing so.

"Not only has Onwenu received an above-average grade from Pro Football Focus every year, but he's also posted marks of 70 or higher four times while playing three different positions," Holder said.

Onwenu is now tied for being the longest tenured player on the Patriots next to other members of the 2020 draft class. He has been the lone offensive lineman to make starts in each of the subsequent five seasons, and signed a three-year contract worth $57 million last offseason.

Onwenu dealt with a hand injury during organized team activities (OTAs), limiting his participation, but should be ready to go for the sixth NFL season of his career.
