Patriots' Mac Jones reacts to Raiders firing Josh McDaniels

Josh McDaniels served as offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots and helped quarterback Mac Jones earn a Pro Bowl nod as a rookie in 2021 before McDaniels became the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Jones spoke with reporters Wednesday and addressed the Raiders firing McDaniels, along with general manager Dave Ziegler, late Tuesday night.

"I have a lot of respect for Josh and his family," Jones said, per Patriots beat reporter Zack Cox of NESN. "I had a great experience with him. We have a good relationship. It’s a tough part of the business, but like I said, I have a lot of respect for Josh and his family, and what he’s done for this place and all that, too. So definitely, thoughts are with him."

Jones struggled last season playing under assistants Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, and the 25-year-old is in the middle of yet another disappointing campaign while working alongside current New England offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. According to ESPN stats, Jones heads into Week 9 ranked 23rd with a 43.0 adjusted QBR and 22nd with an 82.5 passer rating on the season. It's believed backup Bailey Zappe could replace Jones atop the depth chart as soon as next week depending on what happens when 2-6 New England hosts the 3-5 Washington Commanders Sunday.

Earlier on Wednesday, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick declined to comment on if he'd welcome a reunion with McDaniels. Jones acknowledged he "had a great relationship" with McDaniels but added he's focused on the upcoming matchup versus Washington.

"I always take coaching points from all the coaches I've worked with, and you kind of carry those along with you in kind of your workbook in your head," Jones continued, as shared by the Patriots website. "What did coach tell me in high school? What did coach tell me in college? And, with Josh, what did he tell me my rookie year? You kind of take a little bit from each coach and learn."

The Patriots must pick up or decline the fifth-year option for 2025 attached to Jones' rookie contract next spring. One can't help but wonder if McDaniels could have a say in how Belichick handles that option before the 2024 NFL Draft begins.
