New England Patriots defensive coordinator Terrell Williams has been absent from the team's recent offseason activities after stepping aside to take care of his health. While Williams remains in constant communication with the Patriots and their coaching staff, inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr has taken over Williams' duties in person at the Patriots' practice facility.
Kuhr is not just new to the responsibilities that fall under the umbrella of an NFL defensive coordinator – he is also new to the Patriots organization, as he worked as a defensive assistant with the New York Giants last season. In his brief time with the Patriots, Kuhr has been impressed with the team's veterans and how they have asked him plenty of questions during positional meetings and assisted him in practice.
Among the players who have played a role in this process is veteran linebacker Robert Spillane, another fellow newcomer to the Patriots who signed a three-year, $33 million deal with the franchise during the offseason.
"Robert Spillane's phenomenal. He's like another coach on the field, seriously," Kuhr said. "He's helping guys just as much as I am, and he's made my job a lot easier."
Spillane is coming off his second consecutive 100-tackle season with the Las Vegas Raiders. He finished the 2024 campaign tied for third in the league in tackles (158), in addition to logging two interceptions, two sacks, three quarterback hits, and 10 tackles for loss. The year before, he made 148 tackles, good for 10th in the NFL.
Prior to joining the Raiders, Spillane spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2019-2022) and Tennessee Titans (2018), who signed him as an undrafted free agent after four years of playing college football at Western Michigan. He has been credited with 497 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and six interceptions over the course of his professional career.
