Patriots QB Cam Newton dealing with sore neck after win over Jets

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton helped guide his team to a comeback win over the New York Jets on Monday night but isn't 100% following the win.

As Mike Reiss noted for ESPN, Newton is dealing with a sore neck coming off a hit delivered by Jets safety Ashtyn Davis in the second quarter of Monday's contest.

"My neck is only working on a degree angle that shuts off the degrees to one side," the 31-year-old signal-caller said during his weekly appearance on local radio station WEEI. "So my eye muscles are getting a lot of work in today."

Newton admitted that he held onto the football too long on the play. "But hey, it got us 15 yards, so shoot, it's just the price you have to pay," he added.

The one-time regular-season Most Valuable Player completed 27-of-35 pass attempts for 274 yards with zero touchdowns or interceptions, and he rushed for 16 yards with a pair of scores on the ground. Newton has eight rushing TDs on the campaign.

New England improved to 3-5 with the victory and is preparing to host the 6-2 Baltimore Ravens in this week's "Sunday Night Football" showdown.

"We just have to keep building, and for us, to know that we're in a position that the world will be watching one more time," Newton said of the prime-time contest. "We have a great opportunity to get another one. That's what we're on the chase for."

The Patriots have Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer on the depth chart, and both have seen action this season. It seems unlikely, as of Tuesday afternoon, that Newton won't be able to start against Baltimore.
