Drake Maye of the New England Patriots emerged as a Most Valuable Player Award finalist while he guided his club to a surprising trip to Super Bowl LX.
However, Maye "got pulled into a bad movie" as he endured a rough outing in New England's 29-13 Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
During an interview at the Masters golf tournament, shared over the weekend, Maye used one word to describe what he experienced this past February.
"I think that’s the biggest thing about it: It’s humbling," Maye said about the Super Bowl defeat, per Douglas Santo of Pro Football Network. "You’ve got to get back to work. When you’re so close and within reach, you want that feeling. Everybody says, 'You’ll be back.' It’s not that easy. So, we’ve got to get back to work, and I’m looking forward to trying to prove to myself that I can get back and just have another year to get a chance at it."
Maye learned shortly before the Super Bowl that he finished second in 2025 regular-season MVP Award voting behind Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams. The Seahawks then sacked Maye six times and forced him into committing three turnovers (one fumble, two interceptions), the last of which resulted in Seattle scoring a game-icing defensive touchdown late in the championship contest.
Under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and head coach Mike Vrabel, Maye turned into a revelation as a second-year pro. He has plenty to be proud of regardless of how his latest season came to an end, but he made it clear during the interview that he is already thinking about playing in the next Super Bowl.
"Everybody’s got the same goal this time of year: to get back to that game," Maye added. "I think knowing that we were there and had a chance at it’s just that much more fulfilling for me being able to reach that."
As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Patriots tied for fifth among the betting favorites at +900 odds to represent the AFC in Super Bowl LXI. One wonders if Maye and his teammates will use such information as bulletin-board material during springtime workouts.
