Patriots RB Damien Harris on costly fumble vs. Dolphins: 'It's in the past'

New England Patriots running back Damien Harris has moved on from his costly fumble that likely cost the team a win against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1.

Speaking on WEEI's "Gresh and Keefe," Harris said the most important thing to do after a mistake like that is to move forward. He added it's a long season and it has only just begun.

"It sucked," Harris said. "You never like to lose, obviously, but there's a lot of football left to play. You can't spend time lingering on what happened before."

Harris, who rushed for 100 yards on 23 carries in the Patriots' 17-16 loss to the Dolphins, called it a tough finish to the game and admitted he could've put the team in a better position to win.

"It's in the past," Harris said. "That was last Sunday and we have a new challenge this week. We're playing a great New York Jets team, so we're just trying to look forward and see what we can learn from last week and just improve."

Patriots running backs coach Ivan Fears was candid about Harris' mistake earlier this week, telling reporters he wasn't going to let the fumble slide easily.

"That's something we preach. It is the classic thing you wouldn't expect, giving the God d--- game away," Fears said Tuesday, per NFL Network's Michael Giardi. "It's hard to accept. For Damien, that stings like a son of a gun."

Fears added that he's "confident" Harris will "step up to the plate" in the future.

Harris is in his third season with the Patriots. In 10 games last season, he ran for 691 yards and two touchdowns on 137 carries.

The 24-year-old will have some added pressure in Week 2 against the New York Jets as the Patriots look for their first win of the season before welcoming the New Orleans Saints to Gillette Stadium for a Week 3 matchup.
