The 29-year-old suffered the injury in Sunday's 28-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints. He went down after he took a hand-off on 3rd-and-3 from the New England 27. He ran six yards for a first down but was down on the Saints' sideline before being carted off the field.
White had rushed 10 times for 38 yards and a score this season, adding 12 catches for 94 yards.
White has spent his first eight seasons with the Patriots and will be a free agent after the 2021 campaign. He has won three Super Bowl titles with the franchise.
The Patriots will continue to rotate a running back group that includes Damien Harris, Rhamondre Stevenson, Brandon Bolden and J.J. Taylor.
ESPN's Mike Reiss reported earlier this week the Patriots worked out four running backs this week, including Ryquell Armstead, Dontrell Hilliard, Artavis Pierce and Ito Smith.
